The WaspBane wasp trap is a highly efficient wasp trap and if used indiscriminately will denude whole areas of any wasp population. It is imperative that the trap is only set from mid to late summer. In this way the WaspBane wasp trap will only eradicate those wasps that have become a natural nuisance foraging for sweet foods. During spring and early summer, wasps hunt for other insects and as such are an important means of controlling pest populations. Eradicating wasps in spring could result in localised epidemics of other insect pests. By mid to late summer, wasps will stop hunting for insects (see wasp life cycle) and will instead forage for sweet foods. During this period, the wasp nest is in decline and wasps are no longer performing any form of pest control. This represents the latter part of the wasp life cycle and the wasps will perish anyway once food becomes scarce in late autumn. The WaspBane wasp trap is not only selective for wasps, but it is also selective for the latter part of the wasp life cycle. This means that future generations of wasps are essentially allowed to flourish to make use of the beneficial pest controlling activities of the wasp. The WaspBane wasp trap is selective for wasps but it will also catch flies and occasionally apple moths. In field studies no other insects or animals have been affected by the WaspBane wasp trap. Honey bees remain perfectly safe from the WaspBane wasp trap and therefore the WaspBane wasp trap can be used as a useful tool for protecting bee hives. The WaspBane wasp trap contains no pesticides or harmful chemicals (except those that might form from decaying wasps). As such there is no danger of toxicity to other species of insects or animals particularly resulting from the use of pesticide powders. The WaspBane wasp trap is not a biological control. Use of biological controls including wasp parasites is unpredictable and indiscriminate with a potential for long term ecological damage resulting from the decimation of whole wasp populations. The WaspBane wasp trap does not use wasp sex pheromones and so does not encourage the capture of sexually active wasps. This is considered important in protecting future wasp generations The WaspBane wasp trap refills are safe for domestic disposal. As yet, the WaspBane wasp trap is not manufactured from biodegradable plastics for reasons of safety. Until such time as the safety of biodegradable materials can be evaluated in extremes of temperature whilst being exposed to a cocktail of bait and decaying wasps, the WaspBane wasp trap will be manufactured in K-resin and polypropylene. |
