WaspBane FAQ

Where should I position the WaspBane wasp trap?
This depends on what you are trying to protect but it is important that the WaspBane wasp trap is placed downwind of the area to be protected.

What does downwind mean?
In terms of wind direction, this means that wasps following the scent of the WaspBane wasp trap will encounter the wasp trap before they reach the area which the trap is set to protect.

I have wasps which regularly fly into my kitchen, what should I do?
Pack away or cover food sources and move your outside garbage can or dust bin as far away from the kitchen as practical, and possibly set a WaspBane wasp trap beside the dust bin or garbage can to draw wasps away from the house.

My WaspBane wasp trap does not appear to be catching many wasps?
This is quite normal if the wasps are still in that part of their life cycle where they are hunting insects.

How will I know if the wasps in my area are still hunting insects?
When hunting, wasps will fly very close to the ground or trees or buildings or cobwebs and will frequently land on leaves, twigs, branches, grass or sheltered parts of buildings and explore for insect prey which they will then carry off to their nest.

When should I set my WaspBane wasp trap?
It is best to set the WaspBane wasp trap from about mid summer until late autumn or even early winter.

I have a wasp nest in my garage, will WaspBane help?
If you know the location of a nuisance wasp nest then you should have it professionally removed which is the safest option and WaspBane should only be used where you cannot identify where the wasp nest is.

Can I use WaspBane indoors to remove the wasps that are plaguing my house?
WaspBane will help remove wasps from your house but it must not be used indoors because it may draw more wasps into your home.

Where should I place the WaspBane wasp trap if I am to stop wasps coming indoors?
The WaspBane wasp trap should be placed outside down wind of your home in your garden possibly next to the garbage can or rubbish bin or in a tree so that wasps are drawn away from your home.

Is it safe for me to use WaspBane if I am allergic to wasps?
Only if you set the WaspBane wasp trap before the wasp season starts in mid summer away from your normal areas of activity and you leave the trap well alone until after the end of the wasp season in early winter.

Should I handle the WaspBane wasp trap if I have an allergy to wasps?
You can set the trap safely but we would always recommend that you get someone else to handle the trap for you once in use but if you are alone then the trap is safest when there are no free flying wasps in the trap after the wasp season has finished.

Do you supply a smaller version of the WaspBane wasp trap?
No because there are three reasons why the trap has to be as big as it is:

1. If you change the dimensions of the trap it becomes less efficient.

2. The large size of the trap means that you would not normally have to rebait or handle the trap for the whole wasp season which makes the trap much safer to use.

3. The large weighted base of the trap means that it can be used free standing which means it can for example be placed on the ground amongst fruit litter to catch low level wasps.

How frequently should I rebait the WaspBane trap?
The WaspBane wasp trap is designed for safety reasons not to be handled so you should only have to rebait the trap once a season unless the trap has caught so many wasps that it has exceeded the safe capacity level.

What does safe capacity level mean?
This is the level to which the trap can safely catch wasps before there is a risk of the safety device jamming or before there is a risk of wasps escaping if you have to rebait because the trap has caught so many wasps.

My new WaspBane wasp trap is not filled with bait up to the mark on the bait chamber!
The mark is the safe capacity level mark which refers to the amount of wasps that the trap can safely catch before it should be rebaited and it has no bearing on the amount of liquid bait in the trap.

How do I replace the liquid in the bait chamber?
For safety reasons the whole bait chamber should be replaced and you should not attempt to empty and then refill the bait chamber because this could damage the safety device.

Is it safe to dispose of the WaspBane wasp trap?
The WaspBane wasp trap contains no pesticides or poisons and is therefore safe for disposal however the lid of the bait chamber should be loose to allow air to escape so that the bait chamber can squash flat when it is buried in a land fill site.

I am afraid that the WaspBane wasp trap will spoil the appearance of my garden!
The Waspbane wasp trap is designed mainly from clear and some neutral green plastic which means that when hung in a tree it is actually very well camouflaged and is difficult to see.

Why should I buy WaspBane when I can use a jam jar with a pierced lid and a little honey or a lemonade bottle?
Using jam jars or lemonade bottles may make the wasp problem worse because whilst they will catch some wasps enough wasps feed from the home made traps and escape only to bring more wasps to a useful food source.

Why is WaspBane better than home made traps then?
The WaspBane wasp trap has a number of advantages over home made traps:

1. The WaspBane wasp trap is highly efficient which means that once a wasp enters the trap it effectively cannot escape and therefore cannot bring back more wasps into the area unlike home made traps which release as much as 50% of the wasps they catch.

2. The WaspBane wasp trap is on average about 30 times bigger than a jam jar or lemonade bottle trap which means that once set it will almost always last for a whole season without being touched.

3. The WaspBane wasp trap is designed with safety in mind and has a unique safety device to protect users from wasps.

4. The WaspBane wasp trap has nearly a litre of a specifically formulated liquid bait to catch wasps which requires no handling or mixing.

I have never been stung by a wasp so I do not know if I am allergic - what should I do?
An allergic reaction to wasps stings can be very serious and sometimes life threatening so if you are worried you should speak to your doctor but do not panic because only approximately 1 person out of every 180 may be affected.

I do not know if I am allergic to wasp stings so what should I do if I get stung?
If you develop skin blemishes or swelling other than where you were stung see your doctor but if you have difficulty breathing or your face and neck begin to swell get to hospital quickly and make sure someone is with you until you have been treated.

Will WaspBane help with my severe wasp problem caused by lime trees at the bottom of my garden?
Lime trees are a big wasp problem because they have large amounts of sticky sweet sap and because the whole tree acts as an attractant a single WaspBane wasp trap is likely to be swamped by such a large source of food.

Rather than spend lots of money buying lots of WaspBane wasp traps which if used in sufficient numbers will help the problem it would be more sensible and definitely safer to replace the lime trees with an alternative variety of tree.

How big and how heavy is the WaspBane wasp trap?
The WaspBane wasp trap when assembled is about 50cm tall with a 15cm by 15cm wide base and weighs about 1.3Kg.

Can you make a smaller version of the WaspBane wasp trap?
Not really because the dimensions of the WaspBane wasp trap are essential to make the trap safe, effective and versatile in use.

Is WaspBane effective against paper wasps?
Presently there is no experience of using WaspBane against paper wasps but it is thought that WaspBane will not work against this type of wasp.

After a couple of weeks will WaspBane start to smell and need rebaiting?
No. Provided that the instructions with WaspBane have been followed properly, the WaspBane bait will remain effective all season long and will not smell of rotting insects.

Why are there two versions of WaspBane?
The two versions of WaspBane are the dry bait version which is sold to the public and a wet bait version which is sold commercially and is ready prepared.

The dry bait version makes it easier for shops to store and for postage and shipping. Both versions last all season long when in use and there is no difference in the way that they work.
